Perennial aquatic herb, native of Europe with succulent leaves and reddish stems. Floats or lies in water or mud. Leaves have a peppery taste.

Perennials, aquatic, rhizomatous, rooting at proximal nodes, glabrous, sometimes pubescent. Stems prostrate or decumbent distinguish this from other Brassicaceae.
